Mother Teresa was born in 1910. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. At the age of eighteen, she left her home. After a few months’ training in Dublin she was sent to India, where from 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at a high school in Calcutta, but the poor life of the people outside the school made her leave the school and work among the poorest of the poor. For she didn’t have enough money, she started an open-air school for the children in that area. Soon she got many students who were willing to learn in her school. Later, she got some money and support from the government, which made her go further.
On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa started a society called The Missionaries of Charity, whose task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the society became an international family of poor people.
As time passed by, the society has spread all over the world. They provide help to the poor people in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they do some needed work in some natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. The society also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the homeless people.

Scientists recently found three kinds of animals living two miles at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea (地中海). Their small bodies have many cells — each about the size of a large sand — but they are animals. The most exciting thing about these creatures, is that they don’t seem to need oxygen to live.
What biologists know about life so far is that only one-celled (单细胞) animals can live in places that have no oxygen, and those animals who have many cells can visit these places, but cannot live there. These newly-found creatures could change that idea.
The animals live in a super-salty lake under the Mediterranean Sea. It may seem strange to think of a lake under the sea, but the water in the lake is so salty that it can’t mix (混合) with the seawater above it, and the water in the lake is even saltier than normal seawater. Ordinary seawater has oxygen in it — which allows animals like fish to live — but the water in the lake doesn’t have oxygen.
Finding animals down there was surprising. The scientists at first thought they were the bodies of dead animals floating (漂浮) into the lake from somewhere else. But later they found “these dead bodies” appeared to be alive. Some of these animals had eggs, which suggests they were reproducing (繁殖); and their old skins suggest that they had lived there long enough to grow. But scientists still don’t know how the animals live without oxygen. More studies are needed, and maybe biologists will need to rethink (重新考虑) what they know about animals.
48. At the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, the scientists found       .
 A. many one-celled animals
 B. three kinds of living animals
 C. some dead animal bodies
 D. animals that look like fish
49. What is special about the super-salty lake?
A.The lake water doesn’t mix up with the seawater above.
 B. Animals with many cells began to live in the lake.
 C. The water in the lake has much more oxygen.
 D. The water in the lake has differernt colours.
50. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to       .
 A. the Mediterranean Sea
 B. oxygen
 C. normal seawater
 D. the water in the super-salty lake
51. What can we infer from the text?
 A. The lake under the Mediterranean attracts many visitors.
 B. The animals in the super-salty lake catch scientists’ attention.
 C. One-celled animals may lay eggs to reproduce.
 D. More animals can be found in the super-salty lake.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have discovered a new way of gaining (获取) the sun’s energy. A team from MIT has created a new technique (技术) of using a kind of special windows with chemical dyes (化学染料). The dyes help catch the light from the sun and send it to a special place in the window and then change the light into energy. The scientists say this discovery could change buildings into energy plants. It could even one day mean that the windows in our houses could provide power for our homes. The scientists say their dyes can produce ten times more power than the traditional solar (太阳的) board used around the world today. They also say that this clean and new energy technology could be available (可用的) within the next three years.
The idea was first developed in the 1970s but was given up. Scientists then found that too much of the collected sunlight failed to reach the places on the edges of (在……边上) the windows. Then the MIT engineers thought out the idea of using colored dyes to stop the light from escaping. At the same time, their method only requires cells (电池) around the edges of the windows. MIT’s Professor Baldo explained, “This special glass would let through about 10 percent of the sun to light up the room, and the left would be caught and used to create electricity for other fields. It would look like smoked glass because of the dyes.” He says the new technology could help fight environment change.
52. We can learn from the text that the dyes ______.
 A. could also be used to get energy from plants
 B. keep the light in the windows for longer time
 C. catch more light from the sun in the daytime
 D. produce more energy than the traditional board
53. What was the main difficulty with the new technology at the beginning?
 A. The edges of the windows couldn’t store the sunlight.
 B. Colored dyes on the windows cost too much money.
 C. The researchers couldn’t produce enough huge solar cells.
 D. Only 10 percent of the sunlight could be changed into power.
54. What is the main advantage of this new technique?
 A. It can be used to heat the room in winter.
 B. It can be used to make the room colorful.
 C. It is clean and good for the environment.
 D. It saves people a large amount of money.
55. What’s the purpose of the text?
 A. To show the importance of protecting the environment.
 B. To introduce a new energy technique.
 C. To explain how to use this special window.
 D. To encourage people to fix this special window.

阅读下面短文并回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
What kind of house will you buy in the future? Would you like to live in a house where your plants can call your phone to tell you that they need to be watered? Or a house that helps you cut your energy bill by turning off the lights when you leave a room? It may sound like science fiction, but it already exists! Come and visit the Smart Home at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. It will show how you can live a green lifestyle by making use of advanced technology throughout the home that makes your life easier and simpler.
The Smart Home uses green technology to record the energy it uses, including electricity, water and gas. The house’s energy dashboard (仪表盘) lets you know your energy use through your television and computer. The house greets you with the new information when you walk in the door. It is able to record when you enter and leave rooms, and can turn the lights, television and music off __________.
The Smart Home is made entirely of recyclable and renewable (可再生的) materials. The furniture is made from used light bulbs, plastic bottles and other renewable materials, but you can’t tell from just looking at them. The kitchen countertops (工作台面) are made of recycled glass.
The entire house is designed to control the use of energy. The roof of the Smart Home has a sustainable (合理利用的) vegetable garden. Even the personal computer is green: it uses less power than a 60-watt light bulb. The house can raise and lower the window shades by itself.

Dear Tom,
How is everything going?
Last week I went to visit World Expo 2010 in Shanghai City. It was so amazing to experience the modern development of science and technology in the world.
Only in two days after the opening ceremony, has World Expo 2010 attracted more than 400,000 visitors every day. In all, about 160 exhibition centres are open. There are so many high-tech machines in many fields being exhibited, including some amazing robots as well.
Visitors can see a lot about what future is like, and join some activities for fun. It might also be meaningful for teenagers to learn more about the modern technology.
Best wishes!
             Yours,
